Expand Energy
Verbal & Visual Brand Identity
Challenge
When Chesapeake Energy acquired Southwestern Energy, the resulting company needed more than a new logo. It needed an entirely new brand identity, one capable of representing one of the world's largest energy producers and the largest independent natural gas provider in the US. The Chesapeake name carried real history, but it also carried a mixed legacy that the newly combined company wanted to move away from.
This was a chance to start fresh, and the client wanted to get it right. The new name had to feel real, not invented. It had to stand alone as a single word, with no acronym to decipher and no geography tying it to one moment in time. Most of all, it had to give employees something to rally around and give investors and partners a reason to see this not as a roll-up of two legacy companies, but as a genuinely new force in global energy.
Verbal & Visual Brand Identity ―
Approach
We worked through five rounds of naming with the client, testing ideas against the criteria they'd set from the start. We explored words that aligned with the conversational themes shaping the company’s new direction, including growth, access, connection, and global scale. After five rounds, one name rose to the top: Expand Energy. It was direct, confident, and growth-oriented, exactly the kind of name to carry a regional natural gas company to the global stage.

The final wordmark brought the new name to life. Rendered in lowercase, the logo feels approachable rather than corporate, a deliberate choice for an industry that can read as cold or impersonal. At its center, the x in Expand becomes a forward-facing arrow, split between a lighter blue and a deeper navy, cutting through the letterforms like motion captured mid-stride. It's a small piece of visual engineering that does a lot of work: the mark doesn't just spell expansion; it shows it.
Expand Energy Corporation launched on October 1, 2024, when the $7.4 billion merger closed, and the combined company began trading on Nasdaq under the ticker EXE. The name and mark were ready for the moment. The company now stands as the largest independent natural gas producer in the US, with major positions in the Appalachian Basin and the Haynesville Shale, and a production portfolio targeting domestic and global markets. They have embodied their new name, and the iconic mark continues to carry it forward.
